You read more effectively when you ‘study’. Most times we find ourselves cramming a piece of information for an examination, especially when we have very little time left to prepare. We do this out of panic and tend to forget immediately after the exam or sometimes, before the examination. If you study a lot as a young/adult student, how do you find the time to read up on all that has been assigned to you?
The simple answer is that you learn to read faster, this article has provided tips that make reading/studying easy.
These tips are not the same as skimming(only the main idea of the book is focused on) and scanning(reading at high speed to pick up important parts), although there are some crossovers. If you even learn and use some of these tips, you will go through your reading material faster and you would have more time for other studies, family, and whatever activity that makes your life enjoyable.
Read only the first sentence of the paragraph: Most student flips through the pages of books without knowing the precise way to pick up a point. This causes them anger and frustration, thereby causing them to lose interest in the book. It is to be noted that most writers start each paragraph with a key statement that tells you what the paragraph is about. By reading only the first sentence, you can determine if the paragraph contains information you need to know. If you read literature, it still applies, but know that if you skip the rest of the paragraph, you may miss details that enrich the story. When the language in the literature is art-friendly, I will choose/advise you to read every word.
Do not skip the last sentence of the paragraph: The last sentence in a paragraph should also contain clues for you about the importance of the point covered by the paragraph. The last sentence often serves two functions – it clarifies the thought expressed and makes a connection with the next paragraph.
Reading the whole paragraph quickly: If you have come across the first and last sentences and you have decided the whole paragraph is worth reading or you do not understand that paragraph yet, you do not have to read every word yet. Move your eyes quickly across each line, searching for phrases and keywords. Your mind will automatically put the words in between and understand what it actually means.
Ignore the small words, you know them by their importance in the paragraph. You do not need them.
Search for key points: Look for key points as you read for phrases. You are probably already aware of the keywords in the subject you are studying. Then look out for them. Spend a little more time with the material around the key points.
Mark key thoughts in the margins: You may be taught not to write in your books, and some books should be kept uninked, but a textbook is for study. If the book is yours, mark key thoughts in the margins. If it makes you feel better, use a pencil. Even better, buy a packet of those little sticker papers and slam one on the page with a short note. When it’s time to review, simply read your tabs. If you borrowed the textbooks, make sure you understand the concept of what you have read, or you buy a book yourself.
Use all the tools provided:- lists, dots, sidebar Use all the tools the author provides – lists, dots, sidebars, anything extra in the margins. Authors usually pull out key points for special treatment. These are clues to important information. Use them all. In addition, lists are usually easier to remember.
Take Notes for Practice Tests: Take notes for writing your own practice tests. When you read something you know will appear on a test, write it down in the form of a question. Note the page number next to it so that you can check your answers if necessary or in case you forget the answer. Keep a list of these key questions and you will have written your own practice test in preparation for the real test or examination.
Reading with good posture: Reading with good posture helps you to read longer and stay awake. When you are lying down, your body works extra hard to stay away and do all the other automated things it does without your conscious help. Give your body a break. Sit healthily and you will be able to study longer. As much as I like to read in bed, it makes me fall asleep. When you read, you also sit to avoid sleep, read while sitting on a chair (with your apt attention and concentration on your book or material).
Exercise, Exercise, Exercise(or relaxation): Read and then quickly go for a short exercise. Try it if you are not bound by a deadline. Practice while reading the news or browsing online. Just like learning music lessons or learning a new language, practice makes the difference. Soon you will memorize and remember faster without even realizing it.
You might need to take a break after reading for a while. Some people can read for up to 10 hours straight, while some get bored so fast. Don’t rush yourself or copy your friend. Your friend may be able to read for a whole day without needing to rest, but if you can not do that, do not push yourself to the extreme.
You can relax after reading by sleeping, taking a walk, playing video games, chatting with a friend, and so on.
Most times why we don’t really get any sense out of a book is because we are so pessimistic about its content even before opening it.
We also have to create a constant reading habit to follow all that has been stated
