It’s no news that having a writing niche as a freelancer is important. This is because you tend to write more professionally and it gives you an edge because you will tend to focus and have undivided attention while developing your writing skill.
Asides the above fact, you will get to be and look more professional to your prospective clients.
Why do you need a niche?
Let’s use an instance, if you go to the hospital to get treatment and you are left with the option of choosing between two doctors, doctor A and doctor B, meanwhile doctor A is a regular doctor whose full focus and attention are on his career and specialization while doctor B is a doctor, a footballer, a gym instructor and what not, all at the same time, which doctor would you go for?
Yes, doctor A because you assume he is professional and has focus.It’s very possible that doctor B might be smarter than doctor A but you won’t buy that idea because he seems to lack focus.
That’s applicable to being a writer without having a specific niche of writing, it affects your engagements, your contracts, people are confused on what exactly you specialize in and that is not a good thing.
The truth is that you can be a writer of two niches if you are very versatile and these two niches should be related in one way or the other e.g. someone who is a content writer and a digital marketing writer, it is related in a way and people won’t have to be confused as to where exactly you specialize in.
How does having a niche help?
Finding your niche helps you present yourself clearly, you could boldly say ‘this is an area of writing I specialize in, your target audience knows you for a particular niche and they are not confused.
Having a niche as a freelancer helps you build capacity and expertise in that niche, and also helps you get quality referral from your prospects/clients. Someone could say “ josh is a badass copywriter” or “Helen is a guru when it comes to block chain writing” this is because you have built capacity over time in one niche and people are not scared to refer you to other people using those titles.
The major ways to find your writing niche include;
What do you love writing about?
The truth is that the pattern of writing you are interested in, is not so different from your niche of writing, this is because you will write about topics in this niche of yours effortless and you won’t have to stress so much over it because it occurs to you naturally.What is your field of study?
Your field of study also has a major role to play on the type of niche you should engage in, if you are a fashion student, you will most definitely thrive with a fashion niche, if you are studying a course related to health, you will probably do well in the health sector, same with those studying other courses ranging from theatre arts, business management, computer engineering, architecture and so on. Although this can help you discover your writing niche, it’s not always like that. Furthermore, what previous jobs have you had? You might happen to know a lot of things concerning your previous job and it might interest you to create a niche around it.
What are your other interests asides from your field of study?
It’s possible to be a medical student but you have an interest in relationship/love niches; forex/ crypto niche, copywriting, photography, real estate, etcetera. Your interests are a great indication of what you might want to write about. Again, you don’t want to engage in a writing niche you don’t find interesting because you will just get overwhelmed at the end of the day. Writing comes with a lot of research making, and you’d not want to spend your time making research on topics that seem boring to you and would make you sleep.What are you passionate about and what impact would you love to make?
In the long run, your writing is going to pay off, you might achieve fame and be recognized globally. Now the question comes in, what do you want to attain global recognition for? Where do you want your voice to be heard? What impact do you want to make and who exactly (category of people) do you want to impact? What are you passionate about? These things are major questions you should ask before setting out as a writer; you need to be sure you are passionate about the niche you are writing about. Picture the future, what do you want people to remember you for while you are no more? The greatest copywriter? The greatest crypto writer? One of the greatest relation/love story writers? These things are paramount.
