I’ve heard a lot of people say it doesn’t matter where you start writing from, that the name can come later on, even last.

Although this could work for those who have been in the system for a while, it might not work for you as a beginner or a first-timer. Writing out the title of your novel will help you think in one direction. It curtails the ideas you bring up for your novel, from the name/title, you already have in mind the message you want to pass across and you can start raising ideas from there.

It’s also possible that the title you give your novel at the beginning might not be the same title at the end, probably in the process of writing, you get to have a change of mind or a new idea that is still good. But nevertheless, you should give your novel a title from the outset.

Fiction or non-fiction?

This is also another important point considered while writing a good novel. most novels are fiction but there are also non-fictional novels that tell a story of probably a past hero, a true life experience, and their likes, you should find out what category of novel you want to write.

Genres

There are majorly five genres of writing a fictional novel which include romance-contemporary and historical, the former has to do with the present time, while the latter has to do with any time before world war II, this helps you understand the kind of plot and setting to write about.

Crimes and thrillers, religious and self-help, fantasy, horror, and science fiction. These genres guide you to knowing exactly the kind of vibe or element your novel wants to talk about.

whether you are writing a fictional or nonfictional novel, there are emotions you want to pass across, list them out before wring, what exactly do you want your readers to feel at some point in your novel?

You can make a list of just three major emotions for example love, sadness, happiness, scared, expectant or hopeful, lost in imagination, and whatnot. Having this at the back of your mind will help you choose the right word and make your novel more relatable. This is paramount in writing a good novel.

Theme

this is simply the lesson you want your readers to learn after reading your novels, novels are not just read to fantasize or to keep ourselves from being bored, good novels are also read to learn lessons.

you want to create an impression in the mind of your readers, what’s that thing you want people to know? What you perhaps want to change in the world, and what opinion you want to offer.

The truth is that our books can travel to places we’ve not been to before and you can create a lasting impression in the minds of your readers. There should be a message you want to convey.

Set a reliable character

your characters should be alive, or at least people should be able to feel what they are feeling or relate to it.

your protagonist shouldn’t have a straight and forward experience or else it makes your novel boring, they should encounter challenges, have problems at some point, work out and scale through difficult moments, these things make them feel real.

A new conflict

in each chapter of your novel, there should be a new conflict; it could be a new challenge for the protagonist, a new character added to the scene, a new goal to be achieved and what not.

There should always be something to keep the readers going, and expectant, like I said earlier, when your characters begin to experience a very easy-going life for a long time, it becomes boring, there should be new dramas unfolding with each new chapter.

Generally, for an idea to make up for a good novel, there should always be conflicts.
